Veneers in Middlebury, CT
Everyone wants a smile that is flawless and head turning. In fact, some patients pay large amounts of money for a combination of cosmetic procedures that will result in a dramatic smile makeover. However, there is a single procedure that can provide a beautiful, dazzling smile while masking a number of dental flaws: veneers. At our dental practice, Dr. Kanca provides veneers in Middlebury, CT for patients who are unhappy with their smile and want to redesign the look of their teeth.
What are Veneers?
Put simply, veneers work as a mask for the teeth. If a patient is unhappy with the appearance of one or more teeth, a veneer is placed over and secured to the natural tooth. The veneer is extremely thin and made of durable, tooth-like material. These “shells” provide a consistent, beautiful tooth surface for a perfect smile and can cover a handful of flaws such as:
- Gapped teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Stained or discolored teeth- this procedure works as a long lasting alternative to teeth whitening services
- Teeth that are too short or too small
- Broken or chipped teeth
Process of Veneer Placement
Patients who are unhappy with their smile and want to have veneers placed over their natural teeth must first schedule a consultation with Dr. Kanca. During this appointment, Dr. Kanca will determine whether the patient is right for this procedure and will then create a customized treatment plan for their smile makeover. This treatment plan entails how many veneers are needed and for which teeth, the size and color of the veneer and the final outcome of the procedure.
After the consultation, the patient’s teeth are “etched”. This process requires removing a tiny fraction of the natural tooth. Though this part of the veneers process is generally painless, we can administer anesthesia to calm patients. Removing a thin layer of tooth enamel helps to create a natural appearance when the veneers are placed as opposed to a “bulky” appearance.
After etching the tooth, our dentist will make an impression of the tooth and send it to our laboratory. The lab will use the impressions to make the customized shells that will later be attached to the patient’s tooth.
Creating the shells generally takes 2 to 3 weeks. In the meantime, temporary veneers are designed to cover and protect the tooth. Once the permanent set arrives from the laboratory, our patient visits us to have the temporary veneers removed and the permanent set is attached to the tooth.
Caring for Veneers
Veneers can last up to 15 or 20 years, but their life expectancy also greatly depends on the care you give them. Here are some tips on how to care to care for veneers in order to get the longest life out of your new smile:
- Brush and floss regularly each day. Brushing twice a day (or more) and flossing at least once a day will help to prevent gum disease and rid the teeth of bacteria.
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. This will prevent you from scratching your veneers.
- Keep regular dental appointments. This will keep your smile healthy and will allow dental professionals to monitor and prevent any issues with your veneers.
